What You Need to Know

Arizona has one of the most supportive homeschooling environments in the country, with strong legal protections and state-funded options to help families customize their children’s education. Whether you're new to homeschooling or looking to expand your approach, this guide will walk you through Arizona’s laws and resources.

Arizona Homeschool Laws and Requirements

Arizona recognizes homeschooling as a legal form of education and places few restrictions on families. Parents may homeschool as “private education,” requiring no registration or approval. Families must provide instruction in the subjects they choose but are encouraged to cover core academic areas like reading, math, and science.

While there is no mandatory reporting, families should keep records of attendance and coursework. Standardized testing is not required.

How to Start Homeschooling in Arizona

Beginning homeschooling in Arizona is simple. Parents can start at any time without notifying the state. Selecting curriculum and scheduling are entirely up to the family’s discretion.

Keeping organized records and samples of work is recommended for tracking progress and for any future educational transitions.

Arizona Homeschool Funding

Arizona offers strong support for homeschooling families through its Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) program and tax-advantaged 529 savings plans.

The ESA program allows eligible families—especially those with students who have Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), come from low-income households, or are part of military families—to access scholarship funds. These ESAs are funded by private donations and distributed through approved Educational Assistance Organizations (EAOs). Funds may be used for a variety of educational expenses, including homeschool curriculum, tutoring, therapy, and extracurricular programs. Eligibility varies by region and family circumstances.

Arizona’s 529 plan also allows participants to withdraw up to $10,000 per child per year for K–12 tuition, including certain homeschool-related expenses such as co-op tuition or virtual classes. Contributions to a 529 may also offer a state income tax deduction, providing additional financial benefit to homeschooling families.

Beautiful Feet Books is an approved vendor for Arizona ESAs and aligns well with 529-qualified K–12 expenses. Families can use scholarship or 529 funds to purchase our open-and-go, literature-rich curriculum—supporting a meaningful and flexible education without added financial stress.
