Curriculum Overview

  • This curriculum contains 39 lessons.
  • Complete 2 lessons per week for a one-semester unit study.
  • Complete 1 lesson per week for a one-year unit study.

In this social studies curriculum, students will learn about 30 states and their capitals, indigenous animals, natural science, cultures, and industries. Focusing on three key regions of the U.S., the Great Lakes and Eastern Seaboard, the Mississippi River, and the Southwest, this unit also provides a solid introduction to the natural world and a broader view of the world's continents and oceans through the book Seabird.

Student Materials

This unit study includes four specially designed 18” x 24” maps for coloring and labeling, allowing children to reinforce their learning through mapping. We recommend that each child have their own set of maps for coloring and labeling, so they can build and keep their own personalized record of the journey, adding to their student portfolio. Additional maps are available for purchase here.

The teacher's guide helps maximize the impact of the books with comprehension questions, discussion prompts, hands-on activities, and vocabulary words.

Who It's For

We absolutely loved these books and learned so much! My grandsons especially enjoyed the maps and they’re still pinned to the wall above their desks 2 years later. We added in many ‘rabbit trail’ books, videos and hands on activities such as the Steamship Museum in Kansas City while reading Minn of the Mississippi. While on vacation that year my grandsons were playing in a lovely Colorado stream where they fashioned their own version of Paddle out of a log and sent him on his way down stream. It doesn’t get any better than that!

Paddle to the Sea and Tree in the Trail were cute and fun. These two books were also enjoyable to read. The other two books, Minn of the Mississippi and Seabird were not as enjoyable. The books were hard to read and we struggled to finish them. I won't be using this curriculum again in the future.

I have done 1 of the books so far with my son. The books are definitely geared more towards boys. I won't do the study with my girls as they wouldn't enjoy it nearly as much. If you do one book a year it gives them time to really absorb the information and take it all in. I started this with my son in 3rd grade and it was perfect age for him to begin the study.

We have enjoyed these four books of geography so much. The guide just gently holds our hand as we walk through each story. We love Paddle. He is a part of our family now. thank you.

I first saw this curriculum at a convention several years ago. I knew I wanted to do it, but I wanted to wait until the year my boys could do it together--this year was the year! One boy is in 3rd and the other in 7th and it's been the PERFECT curriculum. They each enjoy making their maps, love the stories, and enjoy the relaxed style of the unit studies. We've covered history, geography, biology, and more! I also purchased the coordinating IEW writing course which is a perfect match to this and enhances everything! I strongly recommend this program to any who want a GROUP curriculum and who like the laid back style of unit studies.

We just started this Study guide and it is so amazing! My 8 year old son is loving digging deep into all the suggestions in the guide, watching youtube videos of beavers, deers loosing their antlers, sawmills, etc. It is so much more than a geography curriculum. I had planned on only doing it once a week and we did it three times this week! The maps are fantastic!

Very excited about teaching geography this year along with the IEW geography based writing lessons. It will be nice to use the Holling C. Holling books cover several different areas of learning!

This is such a beautiful study! We are enjoying it immensely! The maps are large and the aged coloring just adds to the beauty. The study is such a guide- not too much, not too little for the teacher. Perfect for our home!

We are loving this Study guide and books! I especially like that all my children, preschool-6th grade, can participate.

The maps are gorgeous! Some of the books are better than others, though. I actually used this as an opportunity to get Grandma involved in our homeschool, and she took over geography! They liked Paddle to the Sea the best, I believe.

My family is really enjoying our experience working through Beautiful Feet's Geography pack. My 7 and 9 year old look forward to the stories and mapping our journey on their own maps. I like how we are incorporating vocabulary, narration, science and writing skills alongside our new geography knowledge and mapping skills. I look forward to using additional resources from Beautiful Feet Books.

This study guide is so helpful for those using the Holling C. Holling books for geography. We use Ambleside Online, but I decided to get a little extra help with this study guide. So glad we did!

While this is a geography study, my boys ended up engaging in math, cartography, botany, biology, anthropology, archeology, paleontology, language arts, composition, drawing, water color, and spelling. I loved watching them engage with dictionaries, encyclopedias and various nature books as they conducted their research. We read two chapters per lesson and really enjoyed the questions and exercises provided in the Beautiful Feet Geography guide. These books were on high demand and requested often. How I love to see my children engage with living books that become a part of their childhood and help shape who they are becoming. I will be joyfully use this guide with all my children as they grow.

I used this literature pack with my 4th and 6th grader, but could not keep my 2nd and Kinder kids away! The Holling C. Holling books chosen are stunning and drew the kids in. The study guide sectioned the readings into short, simple lessons, making it very easy to implement. The beautiful hands-on maps coordinated with our readings and were excitedly filled in by the kids. I am so glad we didn't skip the maps! My kids begged to do these lessons. If for that reason alone, I can't speak highly enough about these products.

The Geography guide is great. My children enjoy the books even more with this guide!

Doing this study without the maps is not an option. Even my non-artsy kids enjoyed creating and following the books characters on their journeys. The guide offers additional study options to elevate the content for older students, and the younger ones can listen in and enjoy the plot line of any of the books. We spread out the books to break up our regular routine.

I love this set! Holing C. Holling is a great author. This makes learning geography fun!

I have been using your literature packs for almost 20 years. My children LOVE the books. I am teaching your geography to 2 of my little ones (ages 7 and 8) and they absolutely love it... so much so that they get sad when it isn't 'geography day'! It is so hard to put down the reading once we get started. We read Paddle to the Sea , completed all maps, made 2 edible maps, and then watched the Youtube version of the story- all in 3 weeks! Thank you:)

I used this geography curriculum with a 6th grader and a 1st grader at the same time. It worked remarkably well for both - the children learned at their own level and they both loved doing the maps. I plan to use it again with my younger child when she is around 6th grade. She will remember things she learned before but will learn the information more in depth the second time around. We love the Holling books and the gentle pace of this geography program. The maps become a treasured keepsake as do the memories of the stories in the timeless books. I highly recommend BF's geography curriculum for a wide range of ages and for multiple ages learning together.

The guide is well written and easy to follow. We used the IEW writing lessons that go along with the books and they go together so well with this program. Some of the books are more challenging than others. We enjoyed Seabird and Paddle to the sea the most.

This is such a great way to teach geography. My son loved the maps. His little sister has kept his maps and pulls them out all the time. She cannot wait until it is her turn. Everyone enjoyed the Holling books, not just my son.
