Beautiful, easy to follow, epic

These Logbooks are a HIT in my house. An absolute MUST by if you are using Far Afield. The curriculum just wouldn’t be the same without it!! The expectations for the students when it comes to notebooking are so clearly laid out. My 5th and 3rd grader (Me and my tag along kinder even have our own!) are never overwhelmed with the notebooking workload, they see what needs to be done and where, and happily do it! I love flipping through all of the work we’ve done so far, especially the water color pages taped in. It’s all around wonderfully put together and worthy of everyone including mom (or dad!) to have one.

The entire bundle is wonderful — from the gorgeous lesson book, to the student notebook and California map — and you can tell it was not only thoughtfully and carefully made, but also constructed with premium materials.

Absolutely gorgeous book. I love the format of these history guides. It makes me inspired and excited, which makes the learning process for everyone more enjoyable.

Our favorite BFB moments this year were finishing Modern American History with my 8- and 12-year-olds, then doing the WWII studies while living here in Japan. They've been to Peace Park in Hiroshima dozens of times, but BFB took them from knowing the history to truly seeing it. Places we'd walked through so many times suddenly had a whole new meaning, and they started making connections they hadn't before. That's one of my favorite things about homeschooling.

We are loving learning history through living books! Great selections, although we have to tweak the lessons a bit due to the length of the reading assignments. Overall, we are enjoying it and would use again.

Better than any other History curriculum I have used in the past. This is our 3rd year homeschool(now 5th grade) and so far, this is our favorite curriculum. Will continue it for future years.

I cannot sing enough praises for this science curriculum!! I have heard of homeschool moms 'falling in love' with a curriculum, but that has never really happened for me. I feel as if I'm always looking for the next best thing, but let me tell you, I'm no longer searching for science! We absolutely LOVE Far Afield! I've never seen any science set up this way and it is A+. I am using this for my 5th, 3rd, and tag along Kindergartener. It is so easy to level up and down and is truly making a lovely family subject for us. I love that The Wind and the Willows is the spine, and NO you don't need to read the whole chapter before moving on to the next lesson. We read this slowly in our morning basket and follow the prompts as we get to them, WHILE we do the other chapter lessons twice a week. This is working beautifully. The other lessons are where I start leveling up or down. For example in lesson 6 they have students using a Dichotomous Key to label the four main characters in The Wind in the Willows. While I had my 3rd and 5th graders use the key to label their log books, I just had my kindergartener draw a picture of one of the animals. When she finished she scampered off to play! Speaking of the log books, we have always been Charlotte Mason 'purists' and have only used nature notebooks until now (which at times felt like pulling teeth to be honest), but we LOVE these log books. My kids are responding so much better to making 'log book entries' when they visual see the layout and what is expected of them. I think it has made science and journaling their discoveries feel approachable and doable. I have a log book as well and I'm enjoying filling it in along side them. Now some logistics... Could this be used for an independent study? Yes, my 5th grader could easily read the books and do the activities solo but he would need to check in to orally answer the teacher guide questions. Would he get as much out of it on his own? Probably not. Would I use this if I only had children younger than 4th grade? No! It is SO full and rich that I would save it for the right age range, but would for sure recommend it as the spine for a family with a mix of older and younger children. Like I said, I truly cannot sing praises enough for Far Afield!! Now to pray BFB releases more like it!!!

I purchased teacher guides for EAH K-3, US Geography K-3, Character, Music Appreciation and Seasons Afield K-3 along with corresponding notebooks, watercolor cards and maps.
I think the only critique would be that the notebooks for history and science could be made with thicker paper and possibly be lay-flat, spiral bound to make note-booking and adding pictures easier. Because you will want to keep these!
We are incredibly excited to use this for my daughter’s 1st grade year.
I still have my binder from when my own mom did BFB EAH with me 25+ years ago. I am testament that the hands on learning and beautiful literature stay with you always. My oldest son is named Leif after ‘Leif the Lucky’. I loved the D’Aulaire illustrations as a child and when I grew up and married a real life, red-headed ‘Eric the Red’ it only seemed right to have my own Leif.
BFB stands the test of time.
