Our Process
Four decades of experience have taught us a thing or two about creating curriculum that works. Here’s how we do it.
Seasons Afield is a nature-based homeschool curriculum for Kindergarten-3rd grade students, designed to connect school, nature, and home in a meaningful way, inspired by the Schullandheim approach to science and nature study. This German educational philosophy emphasizes learning through immersion in nature, fostering a deep understanding of the natural world.
This curriculum is literature-based, leveraging beautiful and impactful stories for memorable lessons and character development. Field guide notecards and watercolor cards allow your child to bring their studies into the natural world.
Through the seasons, students explore topics such as plant and animal life cycles, weather patterns, moon phases, water cycle, basic botany, ecosystems, and beyond. Through nature-inspired handicrafts, art appreciation, and recipes, students engage in both creative and scientific discovery, all while developing important life skills and a sense of responsibility for the environment.
Seasons Afield meets standards for Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and includes field notecards and field watercolor cards to document observations and foster scientific thinking.
Designed to inspire a lifelong love of nature and learning, Seasons Afield supports students in building a holistic understanding of science, art, and life. Like all our studies, lessons are designed to be flexible, allowing families to tailor activities and pace to meet the needs of their students.
*We highly recommend each student has their own notebook, fieldnote & water color cards.

We had been using another nature curriculum for a few years and decided to try this last fall. It has a great book list, but that’s about as far as I can recommend it. It simply is not a nature study or natural science curriculum. It has lots of fiction and art tutorials, art study, handcraft, and a few activities with very specialized supplies. Very little nature study information is supplied.
Hi Shannon,
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re genuinely sorry to hear that this study didn’t meet your expectations.
Seasons Afield was designed to meet Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) while offerring a gentle, observation-driven introduction to science. Our goal is to encourage curiosity and connection with the natural world while presenting key scientific ideas appropriate for K-3rd students.
We’re grateful for your feedback and always looking for ways to better serve homeschool families. Please feel free to reach out if there’s anything we can do to help.
I hate to be the dissenting review here, but this was a huge miss for our family. I have been homeschooling for 7 years and have done several nature studies...this was probably the worst. The information presented in each lesson is choppy, all over the place and doesn't go very deep into any one thing. For example, the lesson titled "Explore" has you learning a little bit about altitude, what are puns and similes, water coloring a dogwood rose, studying a sunset, talking about the tilt of the earth, making a compass map out of sticks, and cooking a bilberry soup (bilberries are from Sweden so we read a bit about Sweden too). It felt very much like they just threw a bunch of different things together without going into too much detail about any one thing. Sadly, I feel like this was a wasted year, with too many things crammed in but not fleshed out fully. If your kid is young and enjoys reading books about nature and water coloring, a quick trip to the library and craft store would be a lot cheaper and possibly more educational.

We appreciate your input and are always working to improve and support homeschool families in meaningful ways. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to our team if we can offer further support or guidance.
We are going to do this program again after first completing it two years ago. It’s is so charming, gentle, engaging, visually pleasing, and just beautiful. I really wish BFB would make a part two because there is nothing like this on the market from anyone. I would love to see a grade 3-6 Seasons Afield 🙏🙏🙏
I have a tendency to get bogged down in the work and not take time for the beauty, but this curriculum helps me slow down and makes it so easy to bring the beauty back into our homeschool.
I’ve used several BF guides and this is the first lower elementary one I’ve used. I bought it for 3rd grade twins. We absolutely LOVED it and I wish there was a part 2, we didn’t want the curriculum to end. I’ve never felt that way about a science oriented book before. It was so gentle and easy to use, and we had a lot of fun doing the activities. Thank you so much for such an engaging book!
“Beautiful Feet has built a family bond around wonderful literature.”
“I want to buy everything BFB sells. It’s that good.”
“History is alive and loved in our home thanks to BFB.”
“We are totally sold on Beautiful Feet – the quality of the teacher’s guides is just incredible.”
“History with BFB is actually my favorite part of the homeschool day.”
“Switching to your curriculum was truly the best decision in our home education.”
“The books used in the curriculum are ones you’ll want to keep forever.”
“Using your studies brings peace to our days. I can teach everyone at once and they love it.”
“Rich conversations and deep connections – that’s why we’re homeschooling.”
