Arkansas Homeschool Laws and Requirements

Arkansas law allows parents or legal guardians to homeschool their children by submitting a Notice of Intent to the local school district each year by August 15 (or at least 14 days before withdrawing from public school). There are no required teacher qualifications, and families have freedom to choose their own curriculum. Standardized testing is only required if the student returns to public school or is being homeschooled under a legal dispute.

Parents must include basic information in the Notice of Intent: the name, age, grade level of the child, and the curriculum being used. Recordkeeping is not legally required but is highly recommended.

How to Start Homeschooling in Arkansas

To begin homeschooling in Arkansas, families must complete and submit the annual Notice of Intent to the superintendent of their local school district. This can be done online or via a printed form. The submission must occur before the school year begins, or within 14 days of deciding to homeschool.

After submitting your notice, you can begin homeschooling immediately. You’re free to choose curriculum, create a daily schedule, and determine learning goals that match your child’s needs and your educational philosophy.
