Homeschooling is on the rise in Virginia, where families benefit from clear guidelines and flexible legal options. Whether you're new to home education or researching curriculum choices, this guide will help you confidently navigate homeschooling in Virginia.
Virginia Homeschool Laws and Requirements
Virginia offers several legal pathways for homeschooling, the most common being the Home Instruction Statute. Under this law, families must submit a Notice of Intent to homeschool by August 15 each year, along with documentation showing qualifications or a chosen curriculum. An annual evaluation of academic progress, typically through testing or a portfolio review, is also required.
Other legal options include using a certified tutor or filing for a religious exemption, each with unique requirements. Despite the structure, Virginia’s laws provide flexibility for families to craft an education that suits their values and goals.
