California Notebook: Student Materials for California History Homeschool Curriculum
A narration notebook is one of the most effective tools in Charlotte Mason and literature-based education. Rather than filling in blanks on a worksheet, students write, sketch, and summarize what they have read in their own words. This turns passive reading into active comprehension, lesson by lesson, all year long. The California Notebook is designed specifically for this, built lesson by lesson into a personal portfolio of your student's journey through California history.
What's Inside
Each page of the California Notebook corresponds directly to a lesson in the California History Teacher Guide, giving students a structured place to capture their learning throughout the year. Inside you'll find:
Pre-printed vocabulary words: Define key historical terms in your own words, building historical literacy.
California state symbols and nature study pages: Color and label California's state symbols, animals, and nature illustrations, including the California condor, valley quail, Garibaldi fish, California dogface butterfly, and more.
Reflection prompts: Practice written narration, moral reasoning, and historical thinking through guided writing prompts.
Map labeling activities: Build geographic literacy alongside the California Map, tracing rivers, cities, trails, and landmarks.
Personal portfolio pages: Develop illustration, sketching, and creative expression in dedicated spaces throughout the notebook.
How It's Used
Throughout the California History curriculum, students return to their narration notebook after every lesson: writing, drawing, and reflecting on what they have read and discussed. Over the course of the year, completed pages build into a portfolio of everything your student has explored, from the California Indians and Spanish missions to the Gold Rush, John Muir, and the modern era.
A Note on Student Materials
Each student should have their own California Notebook. The notebook is designed to be completed individually as part of each student's personal learning portfolio.
Each student should also have their own California Map and California Timeline as part of the full California History (4-6).
