Our Process
Four decades of experience have taught us a thing or two about creating curriculum that works. Here’s how we do it.
Build a meaningful connection to the Lone Star State with this Texas state history curriculum for grades 4–6. Designed for families seeking a rich, literature-based approach to Texas homeschool social studies, this course helps students explore the people, events, geography, and culture that shaped Texas—while meeting Texas state history requirements for upper elementary grades.
At the heart of this Texas state history curriculum are carefully selected living books that immerse students in powerful stories—from Native American tribes in Texas and Spanish exploration to the Texas Revolution, the Republic of Texas, statehood, the Civil War, the cattle drive era, and beyond. Through engaging narratives, students develop compassion, historical understanding, and a lasting appreciation for their state while also learning elements of literary analysis such as characterization, setting, point of view, and other literary devices.
Students learn to identify and map the four physical regions of Texas, along with significant rivers, cities, and landforms. Weekly lessons strengthen geography skills, timeline understanding, and historical vocabulary, and are reinforced using our beloved 24” x 36” Texas map to help students visualize the places they are studying.
This curriculum goes beyond reading. Families enjoy meaningful hands-on learning experiences, regional recipes, and thoughtfully designed projects that bring Texas history to life. Field trip ideas throughout the study encourage families to take learning outside the home and into their communities, because we know some of the best education happens beyond the page.
Students record what they are learning in a beautifully designed Texas Notebook, creating a lasting keepsake filled with maps, illustrations, definitions, written responses, and reflections from their year of study.
Designed for 4th-, 5th-, and 6th-grade students, this study also includes a Step-Up Guide to easily adapt lessons for 7th-grade learners. The guide provides suggestions for deeper analysis, expanded writing expectations, and increased independence for older students.
With both teacher guides and student materials included, this flexible Texas history homeschool curriculum works well in home, charter school, and co-op settings. Lessons are adaptable, allowing families to tailor pacing and expectations to meet the specific needs of their students.
By the end of the year, students won’t just know Texas state history—they’ll understand it, appreciate it, and carry a lasting connection to the Lone Star State.
