Our Process
Four decades of experience have taught us a thing or two about creating curriculum that works. Here’s how we do it.
In the late 1800s, there was a booming demand in bird feathers for ladies' fashion that flooded the Florida Everglades with hunters. As teenagers, Charlie Pierce and his friends set out to hunt plume birds and make their fortune, but what they found in the wild unknown changed them instead. This is a story of adventure, hard truths, and an unexpected brush with American conservation history.

In the late 19th century, hunters killed millions of birds in the Florida Everglades to supply the booming trade in bird feathers for ladies' fashion. As teenagers, Charlie Pierce and his friends traveled deep into the unexplored Everglades to hunt plume birds for their feathers, never imagining the challenges they'd face or what they'd learn about themselves along the way.
The Last Egret is the first of five books in Oyer's Adventures of Charlie Pierce series, following Charlie and his friends as their pursuit of fortune turns into a lesson on conservation and protecting the environment.
The author, Harvey Oyer, is a fifth-generation Floridian and an attorney. He was named Florida's Distinguished Author in 2013 and his books have won several awards, including the Florida Book Award and Mom's Choice Award.
