This Early American History curriculum for 4th–6th grade invites students to explore the people, ideas, and events that shaped the United States. Designed for upper elementary and early middle school students, this teacher guide leads parents in teaching a literature-based course that supports academic growth while building critical thinking skills, moral reasoning, and a meaningful connection to the past.

At the heart of this study are carefully selected living books with compelling narratives that bring history to life. This guide supports teachers in leveraging literature to engage students emotionally and intellectually, helping them develop empathy, nurture character, and retain understanding through memorable stories.

Covering major American History events from 1000 AD to the mid-1800s, including Indigenous cultures, colonization, the Constitution, and westward expansion, this course integrates primary sources, geography, and social studies concepts. Students explore context through mapping activities, historical recipes, and hands-on activities that make learning interactive and immersive. Like all of our courses, this study is fully customizable, allowing families to adapt lessons, activities, and resources to best suit their values and goals.

Each lesson in this guide includes thoughtful questions, reading prompts, and opportunities for reflection, encouraging students to connect with the past and consider its relevance today. These experiences foster both academic growth and moral insight.

Ideal for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade learners, this curriculum offers flexible resources for homeschool families, co-ops, and small schools. More than just a history program, it encourages students to think critically, live responsibly, and engage deeply with the people and ideas that shaped our nation.

Well organized

We love that it’s learning history through wholesome books. The projects and “rabbit hole” trail offs of the sections are great ways to continue diving through the topics of interest. This is the first year we are using BFB and it’s great for all agaes!

Engaging, Conversation-Rich Learning Through Story

We’re partway through the Early American History for Grades 4–6 Teacher Guide, and I’m already so impressed. I love the literature-based approach—it invites meaningful conversations with my kids and encourages curiosity. The book selections are strong and well-chosen, and the format gives us the flexibility to move at our own pace without losing engagement. Even though we haven’t finished the unit yet, what I’ve seen so far has been thoughtful, enriching, and deeply enjoyable for our homeschool days.

I taught this to a 6th grader and 4th grader this year. They loved every minute of it! We learned so much, and we had many great discussions and opportunities to think critically about our history and see both sides. It was well-balanced and exciting. Looking at the scope and sequence, it takes more time than 1 hour per day. We averaged 2-3 at least four days a week and barely got finished. We did some projects, wrote a report, and did most of the notebooking and the timeline. I also added all 40 episodes of Liberty Kids while we studied the Revolutionary War. The kids loved it; it was a great visual compliment to our reading. For sure, a 5-star curriculum!

We have been loving this updated edition of Early American History Intermediate! The teacher book is beautiful! Much more information - I especially appreciate the Rabbit Trails booklists as my son is a voracious reader! As with all BFB studies, this is perfectly customizable! You can make this exactly what you want it to be! It's positively excellent and I look forward to moving onto Modern American next school year! Oh - and I was positively overjoyed that this study ended with Robert Smalls! Because his home is here in my hometown! Perfect field trip ending for this study! And, AND it goes perfectly with the new American Geography! Thank BFB!!

We have used Beautiful Feet before and were pleased, but this set of curriculum has been disappointing. First of all, several things were not included in the shipment. Secondly, many, not all, of the books are incredibly boring. My children struggled to enjoy many of the books. We are such a reading family so this was a huge disappointment to us! Each time we would pick up a new book, they would comment how they hope it’s not a boring one like many of the others. There is so much deep and wonderful literature so I do not understand this selection of books! It’s an expensive curriculum, and I am doubtful that I will order Beautiful Feet again. Hopeful that improvements will be made so that many children would learn to love reading and history and not dread it!
