Our Process
Four decades of experience have taught us a thing or two about creating curriculum that works. Here’s how we do it.
Because we know your children are happiest outside. Our Seasons Afield nature-based homeschool teacher guide brings your homeschool out of the house and into the field in a whimsical, gentle nature study that also meets Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Lessons include art, simple hands-on activities, and beautiful books that help your family enjoy the natural world year-round.
Seasons Afield is a nature-based homeschool curriculum for Kindergarten-3rd grade students, designed to connect school, nature, and home in a meaningful way, inspired by the Schullandheim approach to science and nature study. This German educational philosophy emphasizes learning through immersion in nature, fostering a deep understanding of the natural world.
This teacher guide supports parents through a literature-based approach, leveraging beautiful and impactful stories for memorable lessons and character development. Field guide notecards and watercolor cards allow your child to bring their studies into the natural world.
Based on the changing seasons, the guide leads students through exploration of topics such as plant and animal life cycles, weather patterns, moon phases, water cycle, basic botany, ecosystems, and beyond. Through nature-inspired handicrafts, art appreciation, and recipes, students engage in both creative and scientific discovery, all while developing important life skills and a sense of responsibility for the environment.
Seasons Afield meets standards for Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and includes field notecards and field watercolor cards to document observations and foster scientific thinking.
Designed to inspire a lifelong love of nature and learning, Seasons Afield supports students in building a holistic understanding of science, art, and life. Like all our studies, lessons are designed to be flexible, allowing families to tailor activities and pace to meet the needs of their students.

We loved this nature study! It was our favorite study out of everything we did last year! We loved all the books that went with it (I think we skipped one book). The additional field guide cards and watercolor cards are great! It’s nice having everything you need and ready to go when you start the lesson. We did all the experiments and everything turned out correctly except we did not have luck with sprouting a mango. We loved all the recipes! My sons still make the refrigerator pickles. I really loved how this study incorporated watercolor painting. My son who did not like watercolor prior to this study, now enjoys it and has gotten good at it. My other son has moved on to making watercolor greeting cards and is selling them at our local farmer’s market! Overall I would highly recommend this study! I’m really hoping they make another one for grades 4-6.
Pictures are of the ice candle and two watercolor pictures from the book. My sons were 7 and 9 during this study.
*Referring to the post about the watercolor book pages being wrong- yes that is true. We had one book with the correct page numbers and the other was wrong. I’m guessing the watercolor with me book updated and the page numbers are different. Both of our books were the same as far as pages to paint but actual page numbers were different.
This curriculum is beautiful and exactly what we needed. One annoying little problem that I don' tsee anyone else mentioning so it is making me questions where I went wrong (is there multiple versions of the Watercolor with Me In the Forest book?). None of the referenced pages in the text book aligns with the actual pages in the Watercolor book so I had to go through and put post-it notes throughout the book with the real page numbers.
Love everything about this study so far! I hope they make more editions to continue after this year!
We had been using another nature curriculum for a few years and decided to try this last fall. It has a great book list, but that’s about as far as I can recommend it. It simply is not a nature study or natural science curriculum. It has lots of fiction and art tutorials, art study, handcraft, and a few activities with very specialized supplies. Very little nature study information is supplied.
