Tribes of Indians were the first people to come to the area now known as Texas. For many thousands of years their habits of outdoor living remained virtually unchanged.
In 1519 the first Europeans, a group of Spanish sailors landed on the coast of Texas. They were soon followed by explorers, priests, and soldiers, However, it was not until three hundred years later that settlers from other countries came to make homes, to build towns, and to develop the possibilities of the land.
From 1519 to the time when Texas became a part of the present United States, the flags of six different counties flew over the area. When you look at the pages in this book, you will see how each group of people helped shape the dramatic story of Texas.
